Jewelry Swap!

January 24, 2011

If you’re like me you love getting a great pair of new earrings. And fun new necklaces. And rings, belts, bracelets, headbands, and well, pretty much any other accessory. The only thing I don’t like is draining my monthly salary for it. This gave me an idea! I know that I have several pieces of jewelry and accessories that are sitting on my dresser that, for some mysterious reason, I just plain don’t wear anymore. I’ll look at those earrings that used to be my go-to pair for years, (years!) and I just don’t have the same warm fuzzies I used to for them. They are old news, yesterday’s leftovers. The only solution is to give them away for someone else to enjoy. But instead of heading to the Goodwill and never seeing them again, I should try to pawn them off on one of my friends so that I can witness all the joy they will give to her! And in return they can give me their ex-earrings that they used to love so much! It’s perfect!

I rallied up some of my girlfriends to gauge their interest in a jewelry swap, and they all were totally down! We got together one evening, made dinner, had some wine, and gots to jewelry-swappin’! Here’s a pic of all the second-hand goods we brought:

I decided to treat it like a fantasy football draft; so each girl picked a number out of a hat and whoever picked lucky number 1 gets to choose first. Then, you guessed it, the person who got number 2 gets to go next and pick one item, and so on until we’ve picked everything that we want to come home with us. The leftovers that no one wanted (sorry last year’s Channukah gift) will go to Goodwill. I ended up grabbing some great stuff that I’m excited to incorporate into my outfits soon. As a matter of fact, I’m about to paint my nails with the nail polish I got in my third round pick in a very winter appropriate dark blue color called Russian Navy! I just love recycling.

Have you ever done a clothing, jewelry, or accessories swap? Share your “new to you” pieces that you scored in the comments section!

Hi Stephie, I attended a similar thing. A friend sent out invitations and there were at least 20 people there. We brought jewelry we no longer wanted and she had tables all over the house covered with cloths where everyone displayed their jewelry. There were no rules and everyone walked around, chatted, snacked, has some wine and took whatever they wanted. There was a ton of stuff to choose from. I got a pair of 14kt gold earrings and a couple of pair of silver earrings. Great concept! However, my sister tried it in Memphis and it was a bust – she said people didn’t bring much and didn’t show up!

Hey Sally! The jewelry swap you went to sounds like it was a good time, and you got to take home some great pieces too :) That’s unfortunate about your sister’s attempt, it’s only fun if people fully participate. I have to admit I was worried my friends weren’t going to bring very much either, but I was pleasantly surprised!

Sorry Laura! It was a last minute thing that we did in addition to book club. Maybe you can host the next one! :)
